Newsletter 116 Summer 2015

“But the end of all things is at hand therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers”. 1 Peter 4: 7. Peter wrote these words nearly 2000 years ago and yet the end has not come. Today Christians are likely to respond using Peter’s words in his second letter, “Where is the promise of His coming?” 2 Peter 3: 4. Within the Christian church many now scoff at those who teach on the Second Coming. To focus on the return of Christ is seen as a distraction.

It is in this context that, prayerfully, I believe the time has come to write the following article on the Fall of Babylon. It is a warning of things that are soon to come about. Within the article there is a challenge, do we love what God hates? When these things come to pass will we respond in fear or will we rejoice? Are we in love with the world or do we set our hope on the heavenly city? In that respect the article on the last page is a challenge to us all.

Newsletter 115 Spring 2015

Welcome to the delayed Spring edition of this newsletter. While seeking a word from the Lord on what to include in this edition it became clear that production had to wait until after the UK General Election. The result could have been much worse. But there is still cause for concern. Praying before the election, it seemed that an issue which will come to the fore is ‘freedom of speech’. Under the newly elected government there will soon be a significant curtailment of our freedom to practice and express our Christian faith. Previous governments have eroded the freedom which we once took for granted. In the coming five years this process will be accelerated.

Newsletter 114 Winter 2015

The autumn edition of Trumpet Sounds proposed that 2015 will prove to be a significant year for the fulfilment of prophecy. A likely economic crisis in the US will change the shape of global politics. In the last issue I shared my thoughts on the seven year cycle which is forming a pattern for these last days. I believe that the next seven years will be marked by increasing terrorism.

World events are moving fast towards a conclusion. The day of the Lord is rapidly approaching. Are we ready? In these last days our Lord’s command is to watch. In the Garden of Gethsemane He said to the disciples; “Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation”. As the day approaches there will be turmoil in the world and false prophets in the church. Many will fall away from the truth. If ever there was a time to which Jesus’ words apply it is now.
The purpose of writing and speaking on prophecy is to encourage Christians to ‘watch’, to be prayerful and vigilant and above all look up, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is able to bring us through to be with Him in glory.

The news in the UK is generally optimistic. There are signs of growth in the economy. Violent crime is falling. Wages are catching up with inflation, and we have had a very pleasant spring. Is this the calm before the storm? I think that it is.

Will 2014 prove significant in the outworking of end time prophecy? With the sequence of blood red moons and solar eclipses which will take place both this year and in 2015 there are many who think it will. This edition of Trumpet Sounds looks at two events which could occur this year.

The global economy is an area where dramatic change could take place at any time. It is built like a house of cards. One jolt and the lot will tumble down. The recovery we see today is founded on a massive increase in debt. The best cards have already been played. If something occurs which causes a jolt there is little that can be done to save the situation.

Faced with consistent policy failure both at home and abroad, President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry are desperate to forge a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians. To what lengths will they go to twist Israel’s arm? By the end of 2014 Israel will be more on her own than ever before, especially if she has to take direct action against Iran.

The Fall of Damascus

The following excellent article was written by David Dolan a journalist living and working in Jerusalem.

With the Middle East spinning around at present faster than a Hanukkah dreidel, some have been writing to seek my opinion on the possible prophetic implications of the escalating warfare in Syria and the dramatic Muslim Brotherhood advance in Egypt. Although I am a journalist by profession, having reported the news from Israel and the region since the early 1980s, I also have a longtime personal interest in eschatological biblical prophecy. This is evidenced by my authorship of two prophetic novels, THE END OF DAYS and MILLENNIUM: THE LORD REIGNS. I also touched upon some prophetic themes in my 2001 book, ISRAEL IN CRISIS: WHAT LIES AHEAD? Plus there is the fact that the essence of all biblical prophecy is nothing less than news that has not yet transpired. It is history (His story) revealed before it has actually unraveled on the world stage. In other words, it is hardly divorced from the news. Continue reading

The Titanic

April 15th was the 100 anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. In commemoration of the event Baptist News carried the story of Pastor John Harper.

John Harper and his six year old daughter were travelling to the USA on the Titanic. He had been invited by Moody Church in Chicago to become the next Pastor. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, Harper led his daughter to a lifeboat. As a widower he may have been allowed to join her but instead turned back. He chose to offer the masses a last chance to know Christ. As the ship was sinking Harper was heard shouting “women, children and the unsaved to the life boats”. When one man refused to accept Christ Harper gave him his life jacket saying. “you need it more than I do.”

At a reunion after the tragedy a survivor told how in the icy waters Harper twice challenged him to “believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” First time the man refused but given a second chance he gave his life to Christ. He concluded by saying that he was the last man to be saved by John Harper.

The article concludes: “After the tragedy the White Star Line place a board outside its offices reading KNOWN TO BE SAVED and KNOWN TO BE LOST. The owners of the Titanic had simply reaffirmed what John Harper already knew. There are people who know Christ and will spend eternity with God in heaven and many others who will not.”

Why did Jesus suffer?

The amazing fact about our redemption is that there was nothing accidental about it.  Throughout the Old Testament there are countless references to the fact that Jesus would suffer for our sins.  He is the lamb, prefigured in the Passover, slain from the foundation of the world.   Psalm 22, for example – the Psalm quoted by our Saviour on the cross – gives details of death by crucifixion 400 years before crucifixion was first used as a method of executing criminals, and 1000 years before Jesus died.
